My name is Jennie Hewitt and I am currently your independent County Councillor for Golden Valley North Ward. I am standing for re-election on May 4th, 2023.
I have lived in the Golden Valley for 35 years and taught in Hereford for many of those years. My 3 children were raised here and attended local schools. As an independent, I am unaffiliated to any political party and have always been someone who regards it as essential to make the right decisions free from political influence or party pressure.
I believe it is vital to listen to what people want and need and to respond with the best advice from recognised experts.
Over the past 4 years, I have worked with other progressive Councillors in an alliance to deliver; transparent, honest actions for Herefordshire, a modern transport strategy, better communications, social support and protection for all.
I won’t lie, it has been a hard slog at times and I thought I wouldn’t stand again but I care passionately about my communities, have so enjoyed working with committed and selfless parish councils and feel I have too much unfinished business not to step forward again.
Golden Valley North is a rural constituency where all residents prize their environment. Taking a ‘One River’ approach (i.e. not a Welsh Wye and an English Wye), I will continue to work with citizen science groups to highlight the importance of the river catchments, in particular the River Dore, as being essential to the wellbeing of the River Wye. Our children will inherit an improved rural life in the Golden Valley if we work together now.
Finally, during the last 18 months, I have been taking an important role as vice chair of children’s Scrutiny – voted in by my fellow Councillors when the ‘improvement’ journey began. We have committed to continuing to hear the voice of children and parents in order to play its part in ensuring that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.
My supporters in the ward will be canvassing with me and on my behalf, but I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible on the doorstep.
