Ledbury (County & Town) - Liz harvey
I would like to introduce myself, my name is Liz Harvey and have been privileged to represent your interests as a County and Town Councillor for Ledbury since 2011. I am standing for re- election on 4th May and hope you will continue to give me your support.
National party politics is a mess at the moment. Everyone has a right to feel thoroughly let down. Fortunately, here in Herefordshire something different is on offer! We have our very own grass-roots local party – It’s OUR County – which has now combined with Herefordshire Independents to become Independents for Herefordshire (I4H). Since 2019 Herefordshire Council has been locally-led by I4H ... the first time the county has been released from the grip of national party politics since it was re-created over 20 years ago!
I grew up in Ledbury and have spent the majority of my professional life working locally as a scientist and engineer for MoD in Malvern. As a career scientific civil servant I am passionate about evidence-based decision-making, financial transparency and openness. Since 2019 as Cabinet Member for Finance I’ve been able to make significant progress in tightening up the council processes and introducing professional project management culture which has improved transparency and has put a stop to delay and overspends.
In recent years Ledbury has suffered terribly from predatory and unplanned development because the Conservatives put together undeliverable planning policy framework which deliberately over-promised on housing growth. As Cabinet Member also for Planning I am leading the update of this policy framework so it better reflects the needs and interests of local communities, rather than those of landowners and big developers. I congratulate the Ledbury Neighbourhood Planning team for also completing a critical update of our hyper-local Ledbury planning policies, and for finally securing an agreed settlement boundary for the town.
The viaduct site housing development continues to be a great worry. It remains important that we preserve the route for a second access onto the site, just in case all our fears are proved right regarding the inadequacy of a single access. We also need a whole-development design which takes account of increased flood risk on the site and the need for energy efficient building designs and heating systems for all these new homes. Also we need appropriate and timely investment in community infrastructure to service these new homes and their residents.
I’m pleased to have managed to get the Tesco to Station resurfacing work completed recently and to have secured ringfenced funding for the resurfacing works in Bridge Street and the Lower Road Trading Estate. Resecuring youth provision for our teenagers remains a priority and a review is underway at county level looking at how this can be achieved.
With your support on 4th May, I look forward to further improved working with a newly refreshed and increasingly capable Town Council; getting to grips with our many challenges and making Ledbury an even better place in which to live and work.
