I’m Daniel Lister and I’m standing as an Independent candidate for Ross North Ward, on both the Ross Town Council and Herefordshire County Council, in the local elections coming up in a few weeks on May 4th. Some of you will already know me from the Town Council which I have been on for the last 8 years, including a year as mayor. This year I am standing again for the town council but also stepping up to fight for a fair deal for Ross North on the County Council.
Why am I a Councillor? Well, I have always been someone who thinks that if you want things changing for the better you need to step forward and get involved. For me, rather than giving up and accepting things as they are, I have to get involved and try to be the difference for Ross that so many of us want to see. I am determined to give my time and energy into making Ross North and Ross the best place it can be for all of us. And I enjoy it, and being here for you.
It makes me feel good to help people, to talk to them and hear their issues and ideas and then to try and do something about it rather than just talking. I am a real believer in positive change, to keep chipping away at what you think is best for your community and not to sit back and be a Councillor for the sake of being a Councillor, as part of a big group as one national party or the other, the usual suspects, just making up numbers.
Why stand as an Independent Cllr? Partly for the reason I just mentioned above but also because I don’t think party politics should have any part in how a council is run. At this level it should be about the best people working together, practically and sensibly, to get things done – and not turning into a talking shop where your votes and decisions are controlled by a national party in Westminster. As an Independent, I do not have a political party connection, so I only ever vote with you in mind. I will be working with other fantastic Independents; Milly Boylan, Rob Taylor and Katie Fowler and if elected we will work with Independents for Herefordshire (i4H) group of Independents on the County Council, who are independent, are progressive and will work with anyone that is open-minded and sensible.
These are tough times, with repeated and devasting cuts to Herefordshire voted through by our MPs, (we have £100 million less a year coming into the County in 2023 than we did in 2011 – that’s bonkers, no wonder everything is looking tired). Still, we can try and work harder and better and do more ourselves until that changes. My manifesto pledges will be to; Listen to what’s important to you, To Protect and improve our open spaces, For more provisions for youth services, To keep the pressure on Herefordshire and BBLP to improve our roads, public transport, footpaths, To build on our tourism, Working towards cleaner waterways, Revisit Model Farm for the benefit of local and new businesses.
Above all I need to know what you want and for you to know I am always here for you. Please email or ring me if you want to discuss something that is important to you - and I could come see you too. Thank you for your support over the last 8 years, and fingers crossed for the next 4.
Keep smiling,
Danny
